NAAC DVV 2026: How Automated Data Verification Is Raising the Bar for Examination Evidence
NAAC's Data Validation and Verification process is now heavily automated and cross-references institutional claims against UGC, AICTE, and NIRF databases. Here is what this means for examination records.

The NAAC Verification System Has Changed
Until recently, NAAC's Data Validation and Verification (DVV) process was a largely manual exercise. Peer team members reviewed the Self-Study Report, examined evidence documents, and conducted physical inspections to check institutional claims against observable reality. This process had well-documented limitations: documentation could be prepared hastily for the visit, evidence could be assembled post-hoc, and discrepancies between claimed and actual institutional data were difficult to surface systematically.
The 2025-26 NAAC cycle marks a significant departure from that model. DVV is now substantially automated, with institutional claims being cross-referenced against external databases — including UGC, AICTE, AISHE, and NIRF — through the One Nation One Data Platform. This changes the evidentiary standards for every metric in the Self-Study Report, including those related to examination quality, assessment practices, and student evaluation.
For institutions preparing their SSR submissions, understanding what automated DVV checks — and what it cannot verify — is now a prerequisite for accurate self-assessment.
What Automated DVV Cross-Checks
Under the automated DVV framework, NAAC's system verifies key institutional claims against government-held data before a peer team ever visits. The categories most relevant to examination and assessment include:
Student enrollment and progression data. AISHE holds enrollment data by institution and programme. If your SSR claims 4,800 students enrolled but the AISHE return for the same period shows 3,900, the DVV system flags the discrepancy automatically. This directly affects Criterion 2 metrics related to student-teacher ratio and assessment scale.
Result and pass rate data. Claimed pass rates and result timelines can be cross-referenced against university affiliation records and UGC data. Institutions that claim very high pass rates without corresponding data trails invite scrutiny.
Faculty deployment data. AICTE and UGC databases hold faculty qualification and deployment records. Evaluator-to-student ratios claimed in the SSR are verified against these records.
NIRF data alignment. NIRF submissions from the same institution are available to the DVV system. If your SSR and your NIRF data tell different stories about placement rates, research output, or graduation outcomes, the mismatch is flagged.
The fundamental shift is this: under the previous model, a peer team could only verify what you showed them during a physical visit lasting two or three days. Under automated DVV, the system verifies your claims against records it already holds — independently, before the peer team is even assigned.
Criterion 2 Evidence That Must Survive DVV
NAAC Criterion 2 — Teaching, Learning and Evaluation — is where examination practices are assessed most directly. Several of its metrics now require verifiable, structured documentation rather than narrative assertions.
Metric 2.5.1 relates to the feedback mechanism for quality improvement in teaching and assessment. A claim that your institution collects, compiles, and acts on formal feedback must be supported by structured records — not just a policy document stating that feedback is collected.
Metric 2.5.2 evaluates whether internal assessment is transparent, robust, frequent, and varied. Under automated DVV, this metric's score is influenced by whether your evidence is structured and consistent with external data sources. A narrative description of your internal assessment policy does not score the same as documented assessment records with frequency data.
Metric 2.5.3 assesses the grievance mechanism for examination-related complaints: whether it is transparent, time-bound, and efficient. Under the 2026 framework, institutions are expected to show not just that a mechanism exists but that it has been used and has produced documented outcomes.
Metric 2.6.1 requires that programme outcomes and course outcomes be stated, published, and attainment-measured. Attainment measurement means you have data showing what proportion of students achieved each stated outcome — which requires structured assessment records, not just published outcome statements.
What Digital Evaluation Records Look Like Under DVV
Digital evaluation platforms generate specific types of records that are directly useful for DVV substantiation across these metrics:

Paper-based evaluation systems cannot provide these records in the structured, machine-readable format that automated DVV expects. When a peer team member asks to see your internal assessment records, a spreadsheet of manually entered marks with no audit trail is insufficient evidence under the current framework.
The MBGL Level Difference
Under the Binary Accreditation Framework introduced in February 2025, institutions that clear the binary accreditation threshold — demonstrating that they meet the minimum quality criteria — can pursue MBGL (Maturity Based Graded Level) assessment. MBGL Levels 1 through 5 reward progressively more sophisticated institutional quality management.
The examination-related evidence requirements intensify at higher MBGL levels:
MBGL Levels 1-2 require basic evidence of functional examination systems, grievance mechanisms, and student result records. Institutions that have recently transitioned to digital evaluation and can demonstrate clean, attributable records for the past two or three examination cycles will score at these levels without difficulty.
MBGL Level 3 requires demonstrated use of examination outcome data for curriculum review and faculty development. Institutions must show a feedback loop: that assessment results were analysed, that the analysis was presented to an academic body, and that a curriculum or faculty development decision was made in response. This requires marks data in an analysable format — which paper-based systems cannot readily provide.
MBGL Level 4 requires predictive analytics and evidence that the institution acts on examination data proactively to identify at-risk student cohorts before results are declared. Early intervention based on mid-semester or internal assessment data is the expected evidence.
MBGL Level 5 requires benchmark comparison of examination outcomes against peer institutions and documented evidence of continuous improvement across multiple accreditation cycles. This is sophisticated longitudinal data management.
Only institutions with digital evaluation infrastructure can realistically generate the data required for Levels 3 and above. The mark distributions, evaluator consistency metrics, and outcome trend analyses that MBGL expects do not exist in paper-based systems.
Common DVV Flag-Back Triggers in Examination Data
Institutions that have gone through the DVV process in the 2025-26 cycle report several recurring causes of flag-backs on examination-related metrics:
Enrollment-assessment mismatch. The number of students claimed as assessed in internal examinations does not match the enrollment figure in the AISHE return. Even small discrepancies — students who dropped out mid-semester, transferred, or were exempted — trigger flags if the SSR does not explain them with supporting documentation.
Grievance records not in structured format. An institution claims a functional grievance redressal mechanism but presents evidence as a narrative report rather than a log of specific complaints, dates, categories, and resolution outcomes. DVV cannot verify a narrative claim against external data.
Pass rate without supporting analytics. A claim of a high pass rate in a programme where external data sources (UGC affiliation returns, AISHE) suggest otherwise requires explanation and evidence. Without structured evaluation records, the institution cannot defend the discrepancy.
Outcome attainment without measurement methodology. Stated programme outcomes with no accompanying attainment measurement data are a consistent weak point. The metric requires evidence that attainment was actually measured, not just that outcomes were stated.
Preparing Your SSR for DVV in 2026
Institutions currently preparing or reviewing their Self-Study Reports should take a structured approach to DVV-proofing their examination evidence.
Inventory your examination records. List every examination you conduct — internal assessments, semester exams, supplementary exams — and audit the format in which records exist. Identify which records are digital, which are in spreadsheets, and which exist only on paper.
Map records to NAAC metrics. For each metric in Criterion 2, and for relevant metrics in Criteria 1, 5, and 6, identify what evidence you have and whether it is in a format that supports automated cross-checking against external databases.
Reconcile SSR data with AISHE submissions. Student enrollment and result data in your SSR must match what was submitted to AISHE exactly. Discrepancies between these two sources are the single most common cause of DVV flag-backs. Review both before submission.
Document your grievance resolution system in structured format. Every examination grievance raised, processed, and resolved in the past four years should be on record with dates, categories, and resolution outcomes. If it exists only as narrative reports or physical registers, convert it to a structured log before submission.
Build a data chain from assessment to outcome. For Criterion 2.6.1, you need a documented chain from stated programme outcomes to assessment instruments to marks data to attainment calculations. Each link in that chain must be verifiable.
Why This Matters Now
NAAC has signalled that AI-assisted physical inspections will become standard in forthcoming cycles, and that the proportion of accreditation decisions made on the basis of automated data verification will continue to increase. The trajectory is clear: documentation quality and data verifiability will determine accreditation outcomes to a greater degree than institutional reputation or peer team impressions.
Institutions that invest in digital evaluation infrastructure are building the evidence base that will carry them through not just the current DVV cycle, but the more automated, data-intensive accreditation processes ahead. Critically, the benefits compound over time: the institution that has three years of structured digital evaluation records will score at a different level than the institution that digitises its records six months before a NAAC visit.
The best time to start building that record base was the last accreditation cycle. The second-best time is now.
