Under NAAC's binary framework and the Maturity-Based Graded Levels (MBGL), evidence quality has become the distinguishing variable. Two institutions can both meet the minimum threshold for Criterion 1 accreditation. The difference between MBGL Level 2 and Level 4 comes down to whether the institution can demonstrate a data-driven feedback loop — where curriculum decisions are informed by systematic evidence rather than periodic faculty discussions.

    What 1.1 Actually Asks For

    Sub-criterion 1.1 is fundamentally about whether the institution has a systematic process for curriculum planning — one that is evidence-informed rather than calendar-driven.

    The typical SSR narrative for 1.1 describes the BOS cycle: "Curriculum is reviewed every two years by the Board of Studies in consultation with industry experts." This is process description, not evidence of effectiveness.

    What NAAC's MBGL rubric rewards — and what DVV verification will eventually probe — is whether the institution can demonstrate that curriculum reviews resulted in specific changes, and whether those changes improved student outcomes.

    Digital evaluation data creates the link:

  • Subject-wise pass rate trends over three to five years — If a particular course shows consistently high failure rates, that is curriculum evidence. If a new curriculum revision correlates with improved pass rates in that subject, that is outcome evidence.
  • Mark distribution by question type — If students systematically score well on recall questions but poorly on application and analysis questions, that signals a curriculum-delivery mismatch worth addressing at the BOS level.

    BOS Meeting Integration

    Ensure that at least one agenda item per BOS cycle references evaluation performance data. The minutes should record: "Based on the evaluation analytics showing a 34% failure rate in Engineering Mathematics II, the BOS reviewed the module sequencing and recommended introducing a bridging workshop." This single sentence links evaluation data to curriculum action and directly supports 1.1 and 1.4.

    Multi-Year Outcome Mapping

    Maintain a course-level table tracking three to five years of performance data alongside each curriculum revision event. Under NAAC's DVV process, this table can be cross-verified against examination records. Institutions with verifiable digital evaluation records — where every mark is timestamped and traceable — produce DVV-compliant data that cannot be challenged.

    The Criterion 3 Connection

    While this guide focuses on Criterion 1, it is worth noting that digital evaluation analytics also support Criterion 3 (Research, Innovations, and Extension). Institutions with strong outcome data can identify courses where student performance indicates potential research interest, track how research-integrated teaching modules affect subject performance, and use evaluation patterns to design evidence-based learning interventions.

    An institution operating a digital evaluation system is, in effect, running a continuous educational research dataset. NAAC's higher MBGL levels reward institutions that use their own data to improve themselves — not just those that comply with external requirements.

    Common Gaps to Address Before Assessment

    Most institutions preparing Criterion 1 evidence face the same weaknesses:

    Gap 1: Evaluation data exists in silos. Results are stored by the examination department; the IQAC and BOS never see them. Fix: establish a formal data-sharing protocol where aggregated analytics (not individual student data) flow to the IQAC every semester.

    Gap 2: Feedback forms and evaluation data are never correlated. Student survey responses about curriculum relevance are compared to nothing. Fix: map student satisfaction data against performance data by course and use the combined picture in BOS discussions.

    Gap 3: Curriculum revision records lack outcome data. BOS minutes list decisions but not the evidence that prompted them. Fix: retrospectively add an "evidence basis" field to BOS minutes templates, and include evaluation analytics summaries as appendices.

    Gap 4: Multi-year trends are not maintained. Data from five years ago is no longer accessible. Fix: ensure digital evaluation records are archived in a retrievable format and that summary analytics tables are preserved in the IQAC annual record.

    What the MBGL Levels Reward

    Under NAAC's MBGL rubric, institutions move from Level 1 (meeting minimum standards) to Level 5 (demonstrating exemplary, self-improving quality culture) based primarily on evidence quality and process maturity.

    For Criterion 1, the progression looks broadly like this:

  • Level 1–2: BOS exists, curriculum is reviewed periodically, student feedback is collected
  • Level 3: Curriculum revision is documented with evidence of stakeholder input; feedback is structured and periodic
  • Level 4: Evaluation performance data informs curriculum decisions; outcome changes are documented
  • Level 5: A continuous, data-driven curriculum improvement cycle is embedded in institutional culture with documented multi-year outcomes
  • Institutions currently at Level 2 or 3 will find that introducing systematic digital evaluation analytics — and routing them into BOS processes — is one of the most direct paths toward the higher levels. It does not require structural change. It requires data.
