72,000 Karnataka SSLC Students Found Evaluation Errors. Every Board Should Be Paying Attention.

In May 2026, Karnataka SSLC students submitted 72,686 requests for scanned answer scripts and found systematic evaluation errors. One student was awarded 32 marks in English when she deserved 92. The case is a textbook argument for digital evaluation.

The Number That Should Alarm Every Controller of Examinations

When the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB) announced SSLC results in May 2026, students across the state did something unusual in large numbers: they applied for photocopies of their answer scripts rather than accepting their marks at face value. By the time the application window closed, KSEAB had received 72,686 requests.

That figure deserves to sit without a comparison for a moment. Seventy-two thousand, six hundred and eighty-six students. These are not students who failed and suspected foul play. Many of them are students who passed but whose marks felt inconsistent with their preparation. A pass percentage that felt too low. A subject score that did not add up.

KSEAB managed to upload 40,000 scanned copies before extending the last date for applications to 18 May. What those students found when they opened their scanned scripts confirmed the worst.

The Errors Themselves

The Deccan Herald reported specific cases of evaluation errors that are stark enough to quote directly.

One student from a private school in Bengaluru received 32 marks in English. Her actual performance, verified after accessing the scanned script, showed she should have received 92. A sixty-mark gap between what she earned and what she was awarded. Sixty marks — enough to shift a student from a high distinction to a near-failure, to change college options, to affect scholarship eligibility.

A second student found that she had received 71 marks in Mathematics when she had actually answered questions worth 88 marks. The evaluator had not checked the last two pages of her answer script. Those pages, which she had filled with complete workings, were left unmarked. The evaluator submitted marks without ever reaching the end of her booklet.

These are not edge cases. They are examples of failures that are structurally predictable in any manual evaluation system operating at scale.

Why This Happens: The Structural Root Causes

Physical answer script evaluation involves a chain of manual steps, each one an opportunity for error.

An examiner receives a bundle of physical scripts — typically 25 to 30 booklets per day. They mark each script in sequence. They write marks in the margin for each question, and then total those marks at the end. They record the total on the cover page. A coordinator later transfers that number to a marks register.

At each step, there is no automated check. Nothing flags that page six of a script was never evaluated. Nothing catches a totalling error where a student received 3+4+5+2+7 = 21 but the examiner wrote 19 on the cover. Nothing cross-references the margin marks against the registered total.

KSEAB's director of examinations, H N Gopalakrishna, confirmed that notices would be issued to the evaluators who had committed mistakes and that action would be initiated based on the number of errors. Students whose revaluation showed errors would have their fees refunded.

These are corrective measures after the damage was done. They do not prevent the next student from having the same experience next year.

What Digital Evaluation Removes from the Failure Chain

On-screen evaluation does not eliminate human examiner judgement — it eliminates the structural conditions that allow avoidable errors to reach the final marksheet.

Auto-calculation removes totalling errors entirely. The system adds up sub-question marks the moment an examiner enters them. There is no manual addition step where a digit can be transposed or a carry forgotten.

Page completion enforcement prevents the two-pages-missed problem. OSM platforms can be configured to require evaluator input on every defined section of a scanned answer script before submission is accepted. A workflow that locks submission until all sections are marked is a direct solution to the specific error pattern that cost one Karnataka student 17 marks in Mathematics.

Mark entry audit trails record every mark entered, modified, and submitted, along with timestamps and evaluator identifiers. If a mark changes between the first entry and the final submission, the system logs it. This creates accountability without confrontation — the audit trail is a passive record, not a surveillance system.

Randomised distribution means evaluators cannot associate physical script characteristics — handwriting style, school-specific formatting, recognised names — with particular candidates. Anonymisation does not change the marks a student earned; it removes the channels through which unconscious bias or social familiarity can influence the marks they receive.

The Scale Problem Karnataka Was Always Going to Face

Karnataka's SSLC examination covers hundreds of thousands of students across a linguistically diverse state. The sheer volume of physical scripts — collected, transported, distributed to evaluation centres, marked, returned, and reconciled — involves thousands of evaluators over a compressed timetable.

The 72,686 requests for answer script photocopies represent a fraction of total examinees. Most students with evaluation errors never apply for photocopies. They lack the information about the application process, the fee for revaluation, the time to pursue it during college admission season, or simply the confidence to challenge an official mark. The actual incidence of evaluation errors is almost certainly higher than the photocopy request volume suggests.

The Karnataka story is not a story about exceptional failure. It is a story about what normal looks like in a manual evaluation system at scale. Other boards that have not yet seen 72,000 photocopy requests either have lower enrolment, less informed students, or a higher threshold of acceptance for erroneous marks.

What Boards and Universities Should Do Now

Karnataka's case provides a checklist for any examination authority still running fully manual evaluation.

  • Audit revaluation and photocopy request volumes from the last three cycles. A rising trend signals erosion of student trust in evaluation accuracy.
  • Identify the specific error types appearing in revaluation: totalling errors, missed sections, or mark transfer errors. Each has a distinct digital remedy.
  • Pilot OSM for one or two subjects in the next examination cycle. CBSE's rollout and Uttarakhand's state-level mandate provide operational reference points at Indian scale.
  • Communicate the pilot results to students and faculty. The trust deficit created by 72,000 photocopy requests is not repaired by a policy announcement — it is repaired by demonstrated improvement in the next result cycle.
  • The KSEAB director's response — issuing notices to evaluators — is appropriate as an accountability measure. But notices to individuals do not change the system. The system changes when the steps that allow avoidable errors to occur are automated out of existence.
