The window runs until May 17, 2026. The fee is ₹500 per subject paper. Students who believe their answer books were marked incorrectly — totaling errors, missed questions, answers left unchecked — must pay this fee for the board to re-examine their scripts.

This process is not new. It runs every year, for every UP Board result cycle. But in 2026, it sits in uncomfortable contrast with a decision CBSE made for its Class 12 results: the board publicly announced that post-result marks verification would no longer be necessary. The reason was On-Screen Marking.

What Scrutiny Is Actually Checking

When a student applies for UP Board scrutiny, they are not requesting their answers to be re-evaluated on merit. The scrutiny process checks for a specific and limited set of errors:

  • Whether all attempted questions have been checked by the examiner
  • Whether the marks awarded for each question have been correctly totaled
  • Whether marks have been correctly transferred from the answer book to the final mark sheet
  • Whether any responses were overlooked during evaluation

    CBSE's implementation of On-Screen Marking (OSM) for Class 12 in 2026 addressed each of these error sources at the system level:

  • Automatic totaling: The OSM platform aggregates marks digitally. Arithmetic errors during totaling become structurally impossible.
  • Real-time audit trail: Every mark entered by every examiner is logged with a timestamp and examiner ID. No mark can be missed without a corresponding gap in the audit record.
  • Sequential display: Software presents each section of the scanned answer book in order, preventing pages from being skipped.
  • Centralized tabulation: Marks flow directly from the examiner's interface to the result database without manual transcription.
  • The consequence: CBSE announced that marks verification for Class 12 — the functional equivalent of UP Board's scrutiny — would no longer be required. The error sources that scrutiny exists to catch have been engineered out of the system.

    Class 10, which CBSE continues to evaluate through the physical mode, retains the full three-stage verification process: marks recounting (₹500/subject), photocopy of answer sheet (₹500/subject), and re-evaluation per question (₹100/question).

    This split — digital Class 12 with no post-result verification needed, manual Class 10 with the full scrutiny mechanism intact — is itself a controlled comparison that demonstrates what the switch to digital evaluation achieves.

Running scrutiny processing, error correction, and result revision is an operational cost incurred every year, for every exam cycle, indefinitely.

    Boards that have implemented digital evaluation consistently report that the reduction in post-result verification requests represents a significant administrative savings — savings that grow with scale.

    What the Data Would Reveal

    If UPMSP were to systematically track scrutiny outcomes — the percentage of applications resulting in mark revisions, the subjects with highest correction rates, the evaluation centers generating the most errors — that data would be a compelling case for investment in digital infrastructure.

    CBSE's OSM implementation was preceded by exactly this kind of evidence-building. The board had visibility into where verification requests clustered, which subjects generated the most post-result queries, and what percentage of marks changed following rechecking. That data built the institutional case for change.

    State boards that begin collecting this evidence — even before implementing digital evaluation — are taking the first step toward a reform agenda grounded in data rather than assertion.

    The Student at the End of the System

    At the center of every scrutiny application is a student who performed at a certain level but received marks that do not reflect that performance. They may be applying to programmes with cutoffs they just missed. They may need a specific score for a scholarship or financial support. They are paying ₹500 per subject out of pocket, waiting weeks for an outcome, and trusting that the correction process will work.

    Scrutiny is a necessary safeguard in a manual evaluation system. It functions as designed — it catches errors that the evaluation process generated. But from a systems perspective, the existence and scale of the scrutiny industry is evidence of a quality problem upstream.

    The technology to prevent the underlying errors exists. One major board has already deployed it for its senior secondary evaluation at national scale. Every year that a state board defers the transition is another exam cycle in which hundreds of thousands of students pay to correct problems that the system created.
