NIRF evaluates institutions on five broad parameters, each with sub-parameters and defined weightages:

  • Ph.D students per faculty: Institutions with robust doctoral programmes score higher. Digital evaluation records of PhD evaluation committees, thesis defence processes, and examiner reports become verifiable evidence.
  • Percentage of students passing on first attempt: This is where the link to digital evaluation is strongest. Institutions with digital evaluation records can generate verified, auditable pass-rate data across batches, programmes, and academic years. Manual records are harder to verify, more prone to data entry errors during NIRF portal submission, and more vulnerable to DVV challenge.
  • Median salary of placed students: Requires placement data integrity. Institutions that link placement records to academic evaluation records (both digital) have a stronger audit trail.
  • Graduation rate within stipulated time: Institutions that track exam outcomes digitally can identify bottlenecks — subjects with high failure rates, programmes where students accumulate backlogs — and act on them before students age out of the stipulated completion window.
  • A one-point improvement in the GO parameter is worth the same as a one-point improvement in any other parameter. For institutions ranked 200 to 400, GO is typically the parameter where the gap between their raw performance and their reported score is largest, because GO data is easiest to under-report when records are fragmented.

    Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR) — Direct Impact

    TLR is worth 30% of total score. The infrastructure sub-parameter within TLR includes ICT (Information and Communication Technology) facilities. An institution that can demonstrate a functioning digital evaluation system — scanning infrastructure, server capacity, trained evaluators, verified internet connectivity at evaluation venues — scores better on ICT utilisation metrics than one that claims general digital capability without the evidence to support it.

    More specifically, NIRF's Faculty Information System (FIS) requirement means faculty data must be maintained in a structured digital format.     This is not a large effect for any single institution, but among mid-tier colleges competing for the same perception votes from the same peer academic community, visible innovation in examination practice is a differentiator.

    In 2025 and 2026, NIRF significantly tightened its DVV (Data Verification Visit) process through cross-referencing with external databases — AISHE returns, UGC recognition records, AICTE approval files, NIRF's own historical data. Institutions that submitted claims unsupported by external databases were flagged and their scores adjusted.

    Digital evaluation creates a class of data that is inherently DVV-resistant because it is generated by a system — not entered by a person who might introduce optimistic rounding.     Under NAAC's binary accreditation framework, Criterion 2 (Teaching-Learning and Evaluation) directly asks about the examination and evaluation processes, including whether the institution uses ICT-enabled evaluation systems.   • Submit IQAC annual quality assurance report with a dedicated section on examination digitalisation — this creates the documented institutional timeline that NAAC and NIRF both look for

  • The Specific Metric to Track

    Among all the data points digital evaluation generates, one is the most directly NIRF-valuable: pass rate on first attempt, disaggregated by programme and year of admission.

    NIRF's Graduation Outcomes sub-parameter weights timely graduation heavily. An institution where 80% of students pass all papers in the first attempt has dramatically better GO scores than one where 50% carry a backlog into the second year.

    Digital evaluation improves first-attempt pass rates in a specific way: it reduces the number of students who fail due to evaluation errors (missed answers, totalling mistakes, inconsistent marking) rather than actual performance gaps. These are students who are effectively passing — but whose paper-based evaluation outcome does not reflect that. Converting evaluation-error failures into accurate passes is not grade inflation. It is accuracy.
