In 2026, most Indian universities are still largely running the same end-semester written examination format they used a decade ago.

This is not primarily a failure of intent. It is a failure of infrastructure. The kind of assessment NEP 2020 envisions — open-book examinations, long-form project submissions, oral assessments, portfolio evaluation — is genuinely difficult to implement fairly and at scale using paper-based manual systems.     NAAC's evaluation criteria reward institutions that have operationalized NEP-aligned assessment — but only if those institutions can produce verifiable, structured evidence. This is where digital evaluation becomes not just efficient but essential.

    Criterion 2 (Teaching, Learning and Evaluation) carries 350 points in NAAC's grading system. Sub-criterion 2.5 (Evaluation Process and Reforms) asks institutions to document the reforms they have implemented in examination and assessment processes.     Criterion 6 (Governance and Leadership) evaluates whether institutional decision-making is data-driven. Assessment data that exists only in paper registers cannot be queried, analysed, or presented to a NAAC peer team in structured form.

    Under NAAC's new binary accreditation system, with AI-powered auto-validation against UDISE+, AISHE, and NIRF data, institutions that have digitized their evaluation processes have a clear structural advantage. Their data is consistent, queryable, and verifiable by external systems. Paper-based institutions must manually compile evidence that digital institutions can generate in minutes.

    What Digital Evaluation Enables for NEP Implementation

    A digital evaluation platform does not just digitize existing exam checking. When designed for NEP-aligned assessment, it enables formats that paper-based systems cannot support fairly.

Which assessment formats — project, written examination, oral — correlate with better retention? This kind of analytics requires digital data as a prerequisite; it cannot be derived from physical mark sheets.

    The NIRF Connection

    The National Institutional Ranking Framework evaluates universities on five parameters. Two are directly strengthened by digital evaluation infrastructure.

    Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR) accounts for 30 percent of the NIRF score and includes indicators for pedagogy quality, faculty engagement with assessment, and evidence of outcome-based teaching. Institutions that can demonstrate structured, rubric-based evaluation with outcome data score higher on TLR than those that describe their assessment process in prose.

    Graduation Outcomes (GO) accounts for 20 percent of the NIRF score and measures the fraction of students who complete programmes successfully and progress to employment or further study. Faster, more accurate evaluation — enabled by digital systems — reduces result processing delays, which in turn reduces student dropout driven by administrative limbo. Institutions with faster, cleaner result cycles show better progression data.

    A Practical Roadmap for Tier-2 and Tier-3 Institutions

    More than 70 percent of India's college-going students are enrolled in Tier-2 and Tier-3 institutions. These institutions face the greatest pressure to improve NAAC and NIRF metrics while operating with the most constrained budgets and infrastructure. The temptation is to focus on NAAC evidence-creation as a documentation exercise rather than an infrastructure investment.

    The evidence from institutions that have made the transition suggests a different approach: start with digital evaluation for end-semester written examinations, which is the highest-volume use case and delivers immediate ROI in reduced errors and faster results. Once the evaluation platform is in place, extend it to continuous assessment marks — internal test marks, assignment scores, attendance-linked grades. After two to three semesters, the institution has structured outcome data that was not previously available.

    This data, submitted to NAAC as part of AQAR and peer team documentation, changes the quality of the institution's accreditation case from assertion to evidence. The difference between an A grade and a B grade in many NAAC assessments is precisely this: not better outcomes necessarily, but better documented outcomes.

    NEP 2020 is not going to be un-notified. NAAC's binary accreditation system is not going to relax its evidence requirements. NIRF's methodology is not going to stop rewarding outcome data. The institutions that build digital evaluation infrastructure now are building a data asset that compounds in value: every semester of structured evaluation data makes the next NAAC cycle easier, every year of outcome analytics supports better academic planning.
