Your Exam Data Is Now Your NAAC Score: What India's New Framework Demands
NAAC's redesigned accreditation framework, operational since February 2025, requires institutions to submit structured digital data. Your examination processes are central to the evidence — and paper-based records cannot meet the new standard.

In February 2025, NAAC replaced its letter-grade accreditation framework — the A, A+, A++ system that had governed Indian higher education quality assessment since the 1990s — with a two-track structure: Binary Accreditation and Maturity-Based Graded Levels (MBGL).
By September 2026, the first cohort of institutions attempting the new framework are encountering a fundamental operational challenge: the evidence NAAC now requires for examination-related criteria cannot be extracted from paper-based evaluation systems in any verifiable form.
What Changed in NAAC's Framework
Binary Accreditation is the entry-level assessment. An institution is accredited, provisionally accredited, or not accredited. The assessment is AI-assisted and data-driven — physical peer-team visits have been eliminated at the Binary level. NAAC's evaluation engine processes structured data submitted by institutions through updated Data Capture Formats (DCF 2025).
MBGL provides five progressive levels: Basic (Level 1) through Institutions of Global Excellence (Level 5). Movement through levels requires demonstrating measurable improvements in documented, verifiable outcomes — not testimonials and photographs, but structured, timestamped records that an automated system can process and validate.
The shift fundamentally changes the evidence requirement. Under the old framework, a peer team could walk through a campus, interview faculty, and accept physical records as demonstration of quality. Under the new framework, institutions submit structured data, and NAAC's assessment engine processes it. Data that does not exist in digital form cannot be submitted.
How Examination Processes Hit NAAC Criteria Directly
Criterion II — Teaching-Learning and Evaluation
Sub-criterion 2.5: Evaluation Process and Reforms is the examination sub-criterion most directly affected by digitisation. The DCF 2025 requirements for 2.5 ask institutions to demonstrate:
CO/PO attainment is the critical gap for most institutions. Computing attainment requires that marks be stored at the question level, with each question tagged to a specific Course Outcome and Bloom's taxonomy level at the time the question paper is set. This is not possible with aggregate marks recorded in registers. It requires an evaluation platform where marking schemes are pre-linked to CO tags before evaluation begins, and marks are stored per question, per evaluator, for every answer book.
Criterion V — Student Support and Progression
Sub-criterion 5.2: Student Progression requires institutions to demonstrate graduation outcomes including result declaration timelines, revaluation rates, and semester progression data. Institutions on OSM platforms have this data as timestamped database records. Institutions on paper-based evaluation must reconstruct it manually — and NAAC's AI-based assessment cannot verify manually reconstructed figures against an audit trail that does not exist.
Criterion VI — Governance, Leadership and Management
Sub-criterion 6.2: Strategy Development and Deployment and 6.5: Internal Quality Assurance System both require institutions to demonstrate that quality processes are documented, monitored, and improved over time. An OSM platform's evaluator action logs — recording who evaluated what, when, at what pace, and with what marks — constitute the governance documentation NAAC's new framework needs to verify. This data does not exist in a paper-based system.
The IQAC Reporting Gap
Every NAAC-accredited institution maintains an Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) that submits an Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR). Under the new framework, the AQAR is expected to demonstrate year-over-year improvement in quantified metrics.
For examination processes, the IQAC must track and report:

An institution submitting NAAC data generated from an OSM platform is submitting structured, AI-verifiable records. An institution submitting manually compiled data is submitting figures that NAAC's assessment engine cannot independently validate — and under the new framework, unverifiable claims carry less weight than verified ones.
The NIRF Connection: 20% of Your Score Depends on Graduation Outcomes
NIRF rankings use five parameters. Graduation Outcomes (GO) carries 20% of the total institutional score. The GO parameter measures PhD production, placement rates, higher-education transitions, and timely graduation.
Faster result declaration — a direct outcome of digital evaluation — shortens the time between a student's last exam and their ability to apply to the next programme, receive placement offers, or complete documentation for government jobs. Each week saved in result processing is a week added to a student's outcome trajectory.
An institution that declares all results within 30 days of the last paper is at the benchmark. An institution taking 90 to 120 days on a paper-based cycle loses those weeks from every student's graduation outcome — and those lost weeks aggregate into measurable NIRF score differences.
The NBA Dimension for Technical Institutions
For technical institutions, NBA accreditation mandates Programme Outcome attainment computation at the course level as a condition of accreditation. The Washington Accord — which NBA implements in India — requires PO attainment to be calculated from actual student performance data, traceable to individual answer books.
Without per-question marks stored against CO-PO mappings, NBA compliance documentation is a workaround — faculty estimates substituted for computed values. Engineering colleges seeking NBA accreditation in the October 2026 cycle are discovering this gap directly: the CO-PO attainment sheets filled manually for years cannot be traced to original answer book marks in any audit-ready format.
What Institutions Beginning Preparation Now Can Achieve
The DCF 2025 specification includes a data lookback period. Institutions that begin digitising examination records and adopting OSM platforms in September 2026 can realistically:
The institutions that began this transition in 2024-25 are now in a position to submit structured, AI-verifiable NAAC evidence. For those beginning in September 2026, the preparation window is tight but viable — provided the platform selected generates per-question marks, CO tags, and evaluator action logs from the first evaluation cycle.
The Evidence Gap Is Structural, Not Administrative
It is worth being precise about why manual records cannot meet the new framework's requirements. It is not that NAAC rejects physical registers or spreadsheets. It is that the new AI-based assessment process validates evidence against internal consistency: result dates against evaluator logs, CO attainment against per-question marks, grievance resolution times against case management records.
A paper-based system generates none of these cross-validatable trails. An institution that has operated paper-based evaluation for twenty years may have excellent processes and outcomes — but those outcomes are, under the new framework, unverifiable at the level of confidence NAAC's assessment now requires.
The shift to digital examination processes is no longer primarily about efficiency. It is about generating the category of evidence that accreditation now demands.
