What It Is Actually Like to Be a Digital Evaluator in India
Tens of thousands of Indian university teachers now mark exam papers on a screen instead of at a central evaluation camp. Here is what has changed for them — the workload, the flexibility, the pressure, and the professional experience.

The Old Model
For most of the twentieth century and well into the twenty-first, university examination evaluation in India followed a single template: the central valuation camp.
After the examination season ended — typically April and May for annual examination universities — a university would requisition a large facility: a college campus, a government auditorium, a convention centre. Teachers from affiliated colleges across the district or state would report in person for eight to twelve days. They would receive bundles of physical answer books, mark them in the hall, and submit the marked scripts to a table officer before leaving each day. Attendance was mandatory. Absence required prior approval and a replacement. Accommodation was sometimes arranged for evaluators who travelled long distances.
The central camp model was designed for administrative convenience: it concentrated evaluators, supervisors, and answer books in one location, making oversight simpler. It also imposed significant costs and disruptions on the teachers who participated.

What Changed
On-screen marking (OSM) did not merely digitise the answer book. It decoupled evaluation from location.
When a university adopts OSM, answer books are scanned at a central facility immediately after collection. The scanned images are uploaded to a secure digital platform. Evaluators — the same teachers who would previously have been required to attend a central camp — log into the platform from their own institution, their home, or anywhere they have a reliable internet connection. They mark digitally, on screen, at times that fit within their normal working day.
The change sounds incremental. The lived experience for evaluators is considerably more significant.

What Evaluators Say
Surveys conducted by three universities in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Karnataka between 2023 and 2025, as part of their internal quality audits submitted to NAAC, asked faculty evaluators to compare their experience of OSM with their previous experience of central camp evaluation. The following themes emerged consistently.
Elimination of Travel and Accommodation Burden
The most frequently cited benefit was not having to travel to a central camp. For teachers at institutions 100–300 kilometres from the university headquarters — a common situation for affiliating universities with large geographic spread — the central camp required two to three days of travel and accommodation at both ends of the evaluation period, in addition to the evaluation days themselves.
This travel disruption affected teaching schedules, family responsibilities, and personal health. Female faculty members, particularly those with young children or elderly dependents, disproportionately cited travel and accommodation arrangements as a source of stress. The shift to home-based digital evaluation removed these barriers entirely for evaluators who previously managed them and restored access to the evaluation process for those who had previously sought exemptions.
Daily Flexibility Within a Structured Window
OSM platforms used by Indian universities typically assign each evaluator a batch of answer books — usually 100 to 150 scripts per evaluator per examination — with a defined completion deadline, often five to seven working days. Within that window, evaluators can distribute their marking across days and times that suit their schedule.
A teacher with morning lectures can mark in the afternoon. A teacher with back-to-back timetable commitments on Tuesdays can allocate more time on Wednesdays. The structure imposes accountability — the deadline is real, and progress tracking is visible to the supervisor — but the rigidity of the central camp's fixed daily hours (typically 9 AM to 5 PM with breaks) is replaced by outcome-based scheduling.
Evaluators in the surveyed universities reported completing their allocated scripts in an average of 4.2 working days, with the flexibility to mark in sessions as short as 30 minutes rather than full days.
Reduced Physical Fatigue
Marking 100 physical answer books in a central camp environment involves sustained reading of handwritten text under variable lighting, often in a hall with inadequate ergonomics, for six to eight hours at a stretch. Back pain, eye strain, and headaches were commonly reported in qualitative feedback from evaluators at institutions that had recently transitioned from physical to digital evaluation.
On-screen marking tools include adjustable zoom (handwriting that is difficult to read at standard size can be magnified), colour adjustment, and screen brightness control. Evaluators work at their own desks, with their own chairs and monitors. The ability to take short breaks without leaving an evaluation hall, and to return to partially marked scripts without losing progress, reduces the sustained concentration burden.
The surveys found a 34% reduction in self-reported physical fatigue among evaluators in their first full OSM cycle compared with their self-reports from their last central camp cycle.

The Accountability Dimension
Digital evaluation does not only change what evaluators can do. It also changes what they are accountable for — and how that accountability is exercised.
Productivity Is Transparent
OSM platforms log every evaluator's marking rate in real time: how many scripts have been completed, how long was spent per script, whether the evaluator is on track to meet the deadline. Supervisors — the Head of Examination or a designated valuation coordinator — can view dashboards showing completion rates across the full evaluator pool.
This transparency is unfamiliar to evaluators accustomed to the central camp model, where a teacher could complete work quickly and sit unproductively in the hall for the remainder of the day without any systemic record of that behaviour. Under OSM, both pace and consistency are visible.
Some evaluators find this visibility uncomfortable, particularly in early adoption cycles. Most universities address this by framing the dashboard as a planning tool — it allows supervisors to identify evaluators who are falling behind before the deadline arrives, enabling support rather than penalty — rather than a surveillance instrument.
Score Consistency Is Measured
Because OSM systems capture every mark awarded, universities can run post-evaluation analytics on evaluator behaviour: the distribution of scores awarded by each evaluator, the frequency of maximum scores, the frequency of zero, the correlation between marks awarded and expected marking scheme outcomes.
Outlier evaluators — those who consistently award marks significantly above or below the population mean — are flagged for supervisor review. This is not a disciplinary mechanism by default; it is a quality assurance tool that can identify evaluators who need calibration support or who are working through misunderstood marking schemes.
For experienced evaluators who mark accurately and consistently, this analytics layer is typically invisible — their scores cluster normally and generate no alerts. For evaluators at the margins of expected behaviour, the feedback is more direct than any feedback they received in a central camp environment, where no comparable measurement existed.

How Institutions Are Supporting the Transition
The transition to digital evaluation is not uniformly smooth. Universities that have managed it well share common practices.
Training before the first cycle: Evaluators who have never used a digital marking interface benefit significantly from structured orientation — not merely a PDF manual, but a live session with the platform using sample answer books. Universities that skip this step report higher rates of early-cycle errors and evaluator distress.
Technical support during evaluation: A dedicated helpdesk — reachable by phone or chat during evaluation hours — reduces the anxiety of evaluators who encounter platform errors or connectivity issues mid-session. In the central camp model, technical problems were resolved by the table officer present in the hall. In distributed digital evaluation, the equivalent is a remote support line.
Clear communication on anonymity: Evaluators sometimes express concern that they might inadvertently identify a student's answer book and be accused of bias or its opposite. Training that explains exactly how anonymisation works — what information is hidden, what is visible, and why — consistently reduces this concern.
Pilot with willing evaluators first: Universities that piloted OSM with a volunteer cohort of evaluators before mandating it institution-wide report smoother transitions. Volunteer evaluators become internal advocates who can answer practical questions from colleagues at the next orientation.

The Cumulative Effect
India's examination season involves approximately 11,000 evaluators at a mid-sized affiliating university. If each evaluator previously spent an average of 10 working days at a central camp — including travel days — the institution was collectively consuming 1.10 lakh person-days of faculty time per evaluation season.
That is time that was, during those days, not available for teaching, research, supervision, or institutional service. The shift to home-based OSM, where most evaluators report completing their allocation in four to five working days without travel, releases an estimated 50,000 to 60,000 person-days annually at a university of that size. The time does not disappear; it is redirected to work that evaluators regard as more professionally meaningful.
This is the dimension of digital evaluation that receives least attention in policy discussions focused on accuracy, speed, and fraud prevention. It is, from the perspective of the 11,000 individuals who conduct the evaluation, the dimension that matters most.
